RDS MySQL Upgrade challenges with scale

We want to share our team's experience of upgrading RDS MySQL 5.7 to MySQL 8. It's about a master + a read replica setup with 26TB big EBS volumes, used by about 200 different ECS services and several Lambda functions. We wanted to achieve a minimum downtime upgrade. This was needed so we can move to Graviton instance type and reserve the DB instances to cut costs. We tried 3 approaches and eventually succeeded. Wanted to share the lessons learned with each attempt:
1. RDS Blue Green
- What EBS lazy-loading means on that size in reality
- How to speed up lazy-loading
- How you can (can't) trade-off data consistency for performance.
2. DMS
- Important considerations: parallel writing, Large Objects (LOBs)
3. RDS Replica Promotion
- How and why it worked?
- Caught a bug with gp3 IOPS provisioning in Multi-AZ

Chaos Engineering on AWS Workshop

This is covering the official AWS workshop and represents an introduction to chaos engineering using Amazon Web Services (AWS) tooling, with a focus on AWS Fault Injection Simulator (FIS). It introduces the core elements of chaos engineering:
* form a hypothesis (plan),
* introduce stress (do),
* observe (check), and
* improve (act).

You will learn how to use FIS and other AWS tools to inject faults in your infrastructure to validate your system's resilience as well as verifying your alarms, observability, and monitoring practices.

This is a technical workshop introducing chaos engineering practices for Dev, QA and Ops teams. For best results, the participants should have familiarity with the AWS console as well as some proficiency with command-line tooling.

Additionally, chaos engineering is about proving or disproving a hypothesis of how a particular fault might affect the overall system behavior (steady-state) so an understanding of the systems being disrupted is helpful but not required to do the workshop.

Dimitar Dimitrov

Leading the infrastructure team at Dext

Taming your AWS bill – embracing ARM and other tips

Having started with software development in high school and working part-time during his university years, Dimitar spent a long time doing full-stack web development, including managing servers. This prepared him well for his current role of a lead of the Dext infrastructure team where he's been tackling all kinds of challenges since 2016.

Taming your AWS bill – embracing ARM and other tips

Dext is predominantly an AWS shop. Clouds are great enablers of growth – including your cloud bill. It's been an ongoing challenge to keep our AWS cloud costs at bay for the past 4-5 years, with lots of learnings along the way. The most recent one has been our journey from x86 to ARM for which we will share lessons learned. I plan to also mention what our general approach to cost saving in AWS is – how we look at our AWS costs, what we do for Kubernetes workloads (a kubecost-inspired approach but without kubecost) and some other tips and tricks that are only mentioned in passing the fine print of some AWS documentation somewhere, or not mentioned at all. We'll cover S3, EC2, compute in general, traffic, load-balaners and others.

Pavel is a brainiac at building payment environments on AWS and GCP serverless components that optimize the PCI implementation and maintenance, and simply make the projects less expensive.

Cost-efficient PCI DSS on AWS Serverless

There are many misconceptions surrounding PCI DSS - the security standard, applying to all companies that transmit, process, or store cardholder data. It is widely believed that it’s difficult, expensive, and time-consuming to implement the standard. I beg to differ. In my workshop, I will demonstrate how serverless technology is a complete game-changer when it comes to PCI DSS. By using serverless components for your payment environment, you can save time, money, and effort. You don’t have to waste efforts on PCI DSS when you can focus on your business instead.

Accedia, Senior DevOps Consultant

Self-Service deployment with AWS Proton

Hey, I am a DevOps Consultant at Accedia with extensive experience in cloud administration and automation. Global digitalization is of a particular interest for me and I believe that it can help everybody and affect our lives for good. I like to think forward and resolve the problems now rather than in the future as this save both time and money. However, in my free time I like to take inspiration from having a walk in the mountains and switch off from the world for a moment.

Self-Service deployment with AWS Proton

In the context of AWS Cloud Infrastructure, we usually utilize many resources from different services for different deployments. Over time, the number of applications and resources can increase significantly and, thus, make it harder for management and optimization due to time-consuming tasks. One solution to this challenge is Self-Service portals. It allows developers to become less dependent on additional help from Infrastructure and DevOps teams by granting them access to universal tools and environments.

Builder's Guide to Generative AI on AWS

You have likely witnessed all the focus and attention on generative AI in recent months. Generative AI is a subset of machine learning powered by ultra-large ML models, including large language models (LLMs) and multi-modal models (e.g., text, images, video, and audio). Applications like ChatGPT and Stable Diffusion have captured everyone’s attention and imagination, and all that excitement is for good reason. At AWS, we believe AI and ML are among the most transformational technologies of our time, capable of tackling some of humanity’s most challenging problems. That is why, for the last 25 years, we have invested heavily in the development of AI and ML, infusing these capabilities into every business unit. Yet, we have much more to come, and it’s coming fast! Starting with existing hardware - like AWS Inferentia or AWS Trainium - and services - like Amazon SageMaker, Amazon CodeWhisperer, through recently announced - like Amazon Bedrock, and Titan foundational models - the landscape of available solutions enables many innovative use cases. Generative AI is poised to have a profound impact across industries, hence why we provide a guide for the engineering roles on how those can help you build and innovate (or how in AWS we call them: builders).
