The Enterprise Serverless Scale Of Measure!
Sheen is an AWS Serverless Hero and co-author of 'Serverless Development on AWS: Building Enterprise-Scale Serverless Solutions' (O'Reilly, 2024). Sheen is an experienced engineering leader who guides enterprise teams to architect, build, and operate sustainable serverless solutions. Sheen has held several positions at leading software organizations over his long career. He is very passionate about serverless and loves sharing knowledge with the community. His writings and thoughts on serverless have helped several engineers, teams, and organizations on their serverless adoption journey. He talks about serverless at conferences around the world.
The Enterprise Serverless Scale Of Measure!
The word 'scale' is unique. As a simple term, it is a device for deterministic measurements. As a decorator, it adds magnitude to the situation - hyperscale and enterprise-scale, for example.
Serverless adoption has been ongoing in the industry for over a decade, reshaping the technology landscape with a shift in ideas and operations. Though several large organizations have successfully adopted serverless to operate numerous critical workloads, many in the industry perceive enterprise-scale adoption of serverless as challenging.
Why is it so? Could business complexity be the reason? Or is there a lack of understanding and realistic measures of the scale of operation?
This talk will examine how to measure an enterprise's readiness for serverless, the necessary preparations, and the development essentials for a successful enterprise-scale serverless adoption.

Enabling Zero-Downtime Service Delivery with Automatic Testing in Blue/Green Deployments
The need for speed in modern software development, which led to the growth of DevOps tools and methodologies, has resulted in cognitive overload for developers and operations teams. In this case study, the gap between development and operations has been bridged by applying blue/green deployment techniques, traditionally used for application releases, to server configuration management, utilizing AWS CodeDeploy on Amazon ECS.
Adopting blue/green deployment for configurations fosters a more resilient, reliable, and agile IT environment. It minimizes downtime and enables efficient rollback capabilities while enhancing operational safety and reducing the risk of downtime. Automated testing, normally used in application development, is here applied to new configurations before receiving live traffic, ensuring a smooth transition.
By introducing development methodologies and tools into operational tasks through this innovative approach, cognitive overload is mitigated, and processes are streamlined to ensure consistency and reliability across not only the entire software delivery lifecycle but also the configuration lifecycle.

Are Your Cloud Solutions Well-Architected?
Jordan is passionate about building great teams that can build exceptional well architected products for their customers. Started his journey in Bulgaria with Tangra Software, Netage Solutions, Telerik (acquired by Progress), where for multiple decades honing skills in various technical and management roles.
In 2020, moved to Dublin, Ireland, and joined Amazon Web Services (AWS) as a leader in Amazon CloudWatch. He was selected to lead the team responsible for Amazon’s internal monitoring and alarming APIs. Additionally, the team built from the ground up just in 6 months the service behind the Cloud Watch Metric Explorer, which was a key highlight for the CloudWatch at AWS re:Invent 2020.
In July 2022, took on the role at Microsoft Identity and Security organization, successfully completing a transition of multiple Azure AD services to the Microsoft European Development Center in Dublin, building the local subject matter expertise and advancing the operational excellence culture further.
Are Your Cloud Solutions Well-Architected?
The session will focus on the AWS Well-Architected Framework, a guide developed by Amazon Web Services (AWS) to help everyone build secure, high-performing, resilient, and efficient infrastructure for their applications. The framework provides a consistent approach with proven prescriptive patterns to evaluate architectures and implement designs that can scale over time.
The session will specifically focus on two foundational pillars, among the six in the AWS Well-Architected Framework: Resilience and Operational Excellence. It will include specific examples from the trenches, drawing from the lecturer’s hands-on experience in managing large-scale services for AWS and Microsoft in Dublin.
Resilience in the AWS Well-Architected Framework refers to the ability of a system to recover from infrastructure or service disruptions, dynamically acquire computing resources to meet demand, and mitigate disruptions such as misconfigurations or transient network issues. The lecture covered various AWS tools and services that can help in building resilient systems, such as Amazon S3 for durable storage, Amazon EC2/ECS/EKS for compute capacity, and AWS Auto Scaling for dynamic scaling of resources.
Operational Excellence involves running and monitoring systems to deliver business value and continually improving processes and procedures. Key topics included how to manage and automate changes, respond to events, and define standards to manage daily operations. AWS provides several tools to aid in achieving operational excellence, such as AWS CodePipeline for automating the release process while avoiding downtime due to misconfiguration or bad code, AWS CloudFormation for creating and managing resources, AWS CloudTrail for governance, compliance, operational auditing, and risk auditing, and Amazon CloudWatch for monitoring and observability.
The goal of the lecture is to encourage everyone to leverage the “standing on the shoulders of giants” approach utilizing AWS Well-Architected Framework. This strategy aims to maximize the investment in cloud technology and is applicable to every one: from early-stage startups to teams that are migrating or enhancing existing workloads in the cloud.
